Helen was Elizabeth Hutcheon’s second child and Joe’s first. The family had moved to New Brunswick in 1919 but Helen went back to Presque Isle later that year to have her tonsils removed while 6 year old Iva stayed with Bertha and Jack Little, long time friends of Elizabeth. Iva remembers that Helen was treated differently and was able to get her way with her father. As an older teen she did not work in the store as did Iva.
She finished school and eventually moved to New York City to work. She was in the city in 1942 at the age of 27. Prior to New York she was in Saint John N.B. for awhile where she had a child. She worked at housekeeping and also had some secretarial type work at times. The child died at birth. She later married Herb Newman and had one girl; Barbara who is now married with 2 children in San Diego California.
