He was born on October 5, 1882. He died on July 20, 1921 from tuberculosis. At the time he was resident at the Provincial (Mental) Hospital in Saint John. His date of admission to the hospital was recorded as January 13, 1914. The cause of death was recorded was tuberculosis of the lungs. His diagnosis was also dementia praecox which was an old medical term which included schizophrenia and autism. He had been resident for 7 1/2 years. This would mean that both he and his brother James would have been at the Provincial Hospital at the same time. He was the third of Samuel and Isabella's children to be confined there with psychiatric conditions. He never married.
From a United States border crossing record from February 9, 1912 we can glean some more information. He was crossing into the US via the Port of Vancouver and travelling to Seattle,Washington. His permanent abode was listed as Vancouver, BC and his occupation as a stationary engineer. His physical characteristics were listed as 5'9" in height, brown hair, grey eyes with his right third finger being crooked. It also stated that his purpose in crossing was to take up permanent residency. He was travelling to the home of a friend, Robert McEwan. We can only speculate, and may never know why this never worked out and he ended up back in New Brunswick, in hospital, so soon after.
